Columbia to Get Fast-breeding Mayflies for Festivals

The Columbia Board, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Entomology, voted in April to fund a project to purchase genetically engineered, fast-breeding mayflies from China.  The move was seen as essential to the town, in view of its plans to hold an annual mayfly festival.  Even though vast swarms of mayflies deluged local river towns last year, the populations were described by one scientist as "insignificant." If breeding is successful, this year's yield is expected to be ten times larger than last year's. Citizens are anxiously awaiting the hordes of mayflies, which are expected any day now.
